Communicate clearly under pressure. Develop Assertiveness—the essential maritime soft skill for firm communication, upholding safety standards, and managing high-stress situations on board.
Imagine being on a ship's bridge during a tense situation. You need to communicate clearly and decisively with the captain and crew about a navigational hazard without being aggressive or passive. You must confidently state your observations and recommendations, ensuring your voice is heard and your professional judgment is respected. This is about being able to say, "I've double-checked the charts, and I believe we need to alter our course by 10 degrees to avoid the reef," rather than timidly suggesting, "Maybe we should change course?" or aggressively demanding, "Change course now!"
