In 1980, I walked across the PMMA stage, graduating with High Distinction. But a few years earlier, I was an out-of-school youth with no clear path. I only sat for the entrance exam because I was accompanying a friend. He didn't make it; I did. That twist of fate didn't just give me a career — it saved my life.
