Legacy
A Chance That Became a Calling
MARITIME-e-LEARNER began with a life-changing opportunity. As an out-of-school youth, our founder accompanied a friend to the Philippine Merchant Marine Academy entrance examination and took the exam himself. That unexpected step opened a new path. In 1980, he graduated from PMMA with High Distinction.
The opportunity became more than a personal achievement. It became a reason to pay it forward.
The Roaring 80s: Retired! Not Tired! & Re-Wired
Now in their late sixties, many members of the Roaring 80s are retired, but their wisdom, purpose, and capacity to contribute remain alive. Their next chapter is an initiative that connects professional growth with the dignity and well-being of the pioneers who helped pave the way.
The Roaring 80s Gift of the 21st Century Skills: The Legacy & LURE Initiative for the Upliftment of the Pioneers
Upskill Your Career. Uplift Our Pioneers.
LURE: A Lifelong Invitation To Grow
LURE stands for Learning, Un-learning, Re-learning, and E-learning. It is an invitation to keep growing: acquire new knowledge, reconsider habits that no longer serve us, adapt to changing realities, and use digital learning to make that journey more accessible.
At its heart is a “Wisdom-to-Wisdom” exchange. Today’s maritime learners and professionals build their capabilities while honoring the experience of senior pioneers. In turn, those pioneers share the judgment, stories, and life lessons that no textbook alone can provide.
Experience shared. Confidence strengthened.
The initiative brings together the e-book Harden Your Soft Skills 2.1 and the e-course Maritime Soft Skills Training for Excellence, Resilience and Success, bundled as HYSS 2.1 + MASSTERS v2.0.
For Filipino seafarers and maritime professionals serving the global fleet, technical expertise remains essential. Alongside it, communication, leadership, teamwork, resilience, critical thinking, and sound judgment help people navigate demanding situations and work effectively with others.
As the maritime world evolves through digital transformation and decarbonization, adaptability, digital literacy, cybersecurity awareness, cross-cultural collaboration, and environmental stewardship become increasingly important. Continuous learning helps professionals meet these changes with confidence and purpose.
The proposed 70% Legacy Pledge
The Roaring 80s initiative proposes a transparent allocation for purchases of the HYSS 2.1 + MASSTERS v2.0 bundle made under this project:
- 70% to the R80s Social & Welfare Fund, supporting the community’s financial assistance and welfare efforts.
- 30% to platform maintenance and content updates, helping sustain the learning ecosystem.
This is the proposed allocation for the R80s Legacy initiative, not a statement that every purchase across MARITIME-e-LEARNER follows this split. The project’s allocation and reporting arrangements will be confirmed before its launch.
The vision is simple: an investment in personal and professional growth can also contribute to the dignity, financial security, and moral support of the R80s & Friends community.
Our pioneers lead by example
The proposed first step is for members of the Roaring 80s to become the initiative’s founding learners and supporters during the beta phase. Their participation would help seed the welfare fund, strengthen the learning platform, and demonstrate leadership by example.
Funds allocated to welfare would be transferred to the R80s Treasurer or designated account under the project’s agreed arrangements.
Founding learners would also be invited to share honest reviews and constructive feedback. Their experience would help refine the bundle and guide its wider introduction to friends, associates, and industry partners.
Building support that lasts
The ambition reaches beyond a one-time fundraiser. A sustainable learning-and-support cycle can connect individual learners with maritime education and training institutions, shipping companies, manning agencies, and other partners.
Under the proposed partnership model, organizations could sponsor learning for cadets, junior crew, officers, and maritime professionals while contributing to the R80s senior assistance program. Planned quarterly impact reports would help participating organizations understand how their cohort’s purchases supported the community.
Beta feedback cohorts and milestone campaigns would create opportunities to improve the learning experience, welcome new supporters, and build momentum around clear welfare goals.
More than financial assistance
Upliftment also means being heard, valued, and connected. The initiative envisions a Wisdom Exchange: virtual gatherings where senior pioneers can share their stories, offer mentorship, and connect with the next generation of maritime professionals.
Planned encouragement cards would give learners a way to send messages of gratitude and support, which could be shared with members and beneficiaries alongside assistance.
A proposed R80s Wall of Legacy would invite participating learners to dedicate their purchase to an elder or mentor, share a note of gratitude, or honor someone whose guidance shaped their journey.
A voluntary pay-it-forward contribution option is also envisioned for supporters who wish to give additional assistance. These community and contribution features are planned additions, not services currently promised by this page.
A legacy carried forward
Legacy is not only what we leave behind. It is what we pass on through the people we help, the knowledge we share, and the opportunities we create.
The knowledge we acquire today stands on the shoulders of those who came before us. By strengthening ourselves and uplifting our pioneers, we can help that wisdom travel further.
Why just upskill when you can uplift?
Every learner who grows, leads with care, and shares what they have learned helps carry this legacy forward.
